  • The National Assembly for Wales (Remuneration) Measure 2010 established the Independent Remuneration Board, to make decisions in respect of all aspects of financial support for Members. Appointments to the Board are made by the Senedd Commission, on the basis set out in the Measure.  The Commission must appoint the persons selected in accordance with the arrangements made by the Chief Executive and Clerk. The chair and board members serve for a term of five years and may be appointed for a second term.

The Chair, Dr Elizabeth Haywood, and Hugh Widdis have served one term and were invited to indicate whether they would wish to be considered for a further term; both agreed, and the Commission confirmed their re-appointment as Chair and member respectively for a second five-year term, from September 2025. The Clerk to the Senedd undertook a public recruitment process for the remaining three vacancies.

  • The Board is currently seeking views on proposed changes to the provisions and support which will be available to Members in the next Senedd, after the election in May 2026. The consultation focuses on how pay for Members and their staff will be set at the start of the next Senedd, along with additional support to reduce barriers for Members who are disabled or who have caring responsibilities. The Board will publish its final decision following the completion of both consultations in the summer of 2025. The Consultation is available on the Remuneration Board website.
