In January 2017 the Board agreed to commission research to gain a greater understanding of factors that may deter individuals from standing for election to the Assembly and aspects within the Board’s remit that attract people to the job. This is part of the groundwork to inform its proposals for providing financial support to Assembly Members during the Sixth Assembly.

The Board invited tenders for the research and, following a robust assessment process, appointed Cardiff University (Wales Governance Centre) in April 2017. The report, ‘Unpacking Diversity: Barriers and incentives to standing for election to the National Assembly for Wales’, and the accompanying summary report, were published on 5 July 2018. The Board has agreed to consider the issues raised in the report during the remainder of its term in office.
